本日のトップニュースはオクラホマの竜巻でした。日本でも突発的な竜巻が運動会のテントを巻き上げたという
映像とニュースを見た記憶がありますが、オクラホマのそれはなにせ規模がケタ違いです。今回は竜巻の進路が小学校、住宅を直撃して被害がより甚大なものになったわけですが、アメリカの様な広大な国土で頻繁に竜巻の被害のニュースを聞くということは、その発生数は想像以上に多いものなのでしょう。昔、関西大震災の後で、友人のアメリカ人に冗談交じりに「日本人は地面が揺れ動く土地に平気な顔でよく住んでいるな」と揶揄されたことがありました。その時に「アメリカ人も竜巻が吹きすさぶ土地に平気な顔で住んでるじゃないか」と言い返した時の相手の顔を久しぶりに思い出しました。
